It is very important that you read the loading instructions for your
program to operate properly! And please read the README.1ST file for
information on updating from previous versions of LOGCALL !!
LOGCALL 1994
HAM Radio Call logging Program January, 1994 Version VI
<c> 1992,93,94 by Dan Dye KB5RZJ All Rights Reserved
This program including all executable and data files and documentation,
whether on disk or printed is a copyrighted program and may not be
altered, disassembled, nor modified in any way, by anyone except
the author. Please distribute this program in its complete form, including
all executable, data, and document files.
LOADING
Because of the number of contacts and multiple databases that this
program creates, it is recommended that it be loaded onto a hard drive
into its own directory and run from that directory. Though it will run
from any size floppy, a lesser number of contacts may be entered as floppy
space is limited. To create a directory for the program,
from the C> prompt type MD LOGCALL <Press Enter>
from the C> prompt type CD LOGCALL <Press Enter>
I you have not unzipped the program, then unzip the files into the LOGCALL
directory by typing PKUNZIP LOGCAL94 C:\LOGCALL
This will unzip all the files into the logcall directory you created, as
noted above.
If you have unzipped the program previously, then Copy all the files
from the .ZIP program ( LC.EXE, LCUPDAT.EXE LOGCALL.DOC README.1ST)
into the LOGCALL Directory. BE SURE TO UPDATE YOUR DATA FILES WITH
THE LCUPDAT PROGRAM BEFORE RUNNING THE NEW LC PROGRAM!!
To update your old data files, copy your old data files into the LOGCALL
Directory (you are encouraged to make backup copies before you update them)
type LCUPDAT from the LOGCALL Directory prompt and press the ENTER key.
The update program will automatically update all your data files at once.
The updated files WILL NOT work with previous versions of LogCall! Read
the README.1st file before running the LC program.!
The updated files WILL NO LONGER WORK with previous versions of LOGCALL !!
Ensure that LC.EXE and all the UPDATED data files are in the LOGCALL
Directory.
To start the program, type LC and press ENTER.
This version of Logcall only requires one .EXE file (LC.EXE) to run. It
will create data files if this is your first version of logcall.
OVERVIEW
This program will maintain up to 25,000 Radio Contacts in a neat database
format and will allow searching for various data and printing of a "Log
book". Multiple Databases may be kept! LogCall is nice for contesting!
These instructions are purposefully brief, as the program is very easy
to use and prompts for all information needed.
The following data may be entered into the Database:
*CALLSIGN
*DATE OF CONTACT
TIME OF CONTACT
FREQUENCY
*HANDLE (Name)
*CITY LOCATION
*STATE OR COUNTRY ABBREVIATION
YOUR RST
HIS RST
QSL SENT
QSL RECEIVED
*10 10 NUMBER
COMMENT
2nd COMMENT (added per request by users!)
* Will be included in all searches for data!
This is release 6 of this program, and contains many updates and
new routines! The Database is of special note, is the new sort
routine that will make use of your available memory to do sorts, and
will have no problem sorting 25,000 records!
OPERATION OF THE PROGRAM
Start the program by typing LC at the DOS prompt and pressing ENTER.
When the program is started, a Menu line is presented across the
top of the display. You may use the left and right ARROW keys to
move the highlight to the selection of your choice, then press the
enter key, or you may press the First letter of a choice to select
that menu item. The following commands are outlined in detail:
DATABASE
This is a fairly new feature of LOGCALL! Now you can have multiple
databases of your choosing. Select D or press Enter when the Database
command is highlighted. A menu will be displayed with three menu items
to choose from. You can create databases for local contacts, DX,
general use, contesting, special events, anything you can imagine! You
can created as many databases as you like. However, LOGBK.LGD is the
default database and will always be created by the program, and will
always come up first when LC is started. Use the A command (as below)
to change to another database.
(A) Change to an Existing Database will display a selection box for
current databases. Use the Up and Down Arrow keys to move the
highlight to the database you desire and press enter. The selected
database will become the Current DataBase and all functions will
support this database only, including SORT and Print. You may
add records, delete records, edit records, etc. These selections
are database names you have created, except the default of LOGBK.
(B) Create a Database will allow you to create a database you name
yourself. You may only use Letters (A-Z) to name the database,
Like LOCAL or DX or EUROPE or anything you wish, so long as there
are only letters in the name. The program will scold you if you
try to enter illegal characters in the name. DO NOT ADD AN
EXTENSION, and the program will append .LGD onto the database name
automatically. NOTE** The new database will NOT be created on Disk
until you have entered data into at least one record! The new
database you create will be listed on the (A) part of the menu once
you place data into it.
(C) Quit Returns you to the Main program Menu without changing
anything. You can also press ESC to return to the menu with
no changes.
ENTER
The ENTER command will allow you to enter a new Contact into the
database. Enter each item in the space provided and press the
ENTER key. Dates should be entered in the format MM/DD/YY as in
01/01/92. You may move back to a field with the arrow keys or
Shift-Tab key. When all data is entered you will see a dialog box
asking if the data is correct. Select Y to save the data, or N to
start over. You may also press the up-arrow key to move back to
the last field. Selecting Y will save the data to the database.
Pressing the ESC key will abort the function without saving the data.
You may enter up to 25,000 contacts into the any database! You must
enter at least a call sign to save a record. Records without call signs
will not be saved.
REVIEW
This menu command will display each record in database format on the
screen and will allow you to EDIT it or DELETE it. Pressing the P
key will move to the PREVIOUS record, and pressing the N key or the
SPACE BAR will move to the NEXT record. Pressing the space bar or
the N key when on the LAST record will move you to the FIRST record
and will start over. When the last record is displayed, a message
telling you this will be flashing at the top of the screen.
Pressing E for EDIT will put you in the edit mode for the record and
any incorrect data may be changed. Pressing D for delete will remove
the current record from the database. Pressing the ESC key will abort
back to the main menu.
LIST
This menu command will display the records in row format on the screen.
Pressing ESC will take you to the main menu, The SPACE BAR will display
the next page of records, the UP ARROW will move the highlight selector
up in the page, the DOWN ARROW will move the highlight selector down in
the page, ENTER will Display the highlighted record in the REVIEW
format, as above! This is a new routine that allows selection of
records while displaying in screen row format! Selection of records
has been greatly simplified by this routine, as well as by the FIND
command.
PRINT
Selecting the PRINT command will print out a "Log book" in row
format much like the DISPLAY format above. Follow the directions
displayed on the screen. Generic printer codes are included, so
the data should print on any printer.
FIND
This is a very unique search function that will search not only for
complete or partial Call Signs, Date Worked, State or Country, but
will also allow you to enter a PARTIAL name and will search for it
as well.. For example, if you are looking for William you may enter WIL
and the computer will locate All records that have WIL in any of the
search fields. You may also enter KC and the computer will
search for all occurrences of KC in the database. You may enter
UEL and the computer will find the first occurrence of that text, like
in the name samUEL.... This function makes locating records a breeze!
You can search for all occurances of, say, KB5 or John or Bill or partial
ten ten numbers, or just about any data you wish to locate in the current
database! If the first record found is not the one you are looking for,
simply select K for (K)eep Searching and the next record that contains
the info you are looking for will be displayed, and so on...
To select full information on the last search record displayed, simply hit
the D key for (D)isplay and that record will be displayed in full!
This function makes it easy to see how many Stations in a state or
country you have worked by simply searching for the State or Country
abbreviation!.. However, the most practical use is in logging
contacts.. select (F)ind and type in the call sign of the station you
are currently working.. If you have worked him before, the
computer will tell you along with other info about the contact!
WAS
Selecting WAS will display a Worked All States Chart, indicating the
states QSL's have been received for, states that have been worked but
no QSL received, and states not yet worked. Be sure to complete all
the data entry on contacts, especially the state block and the QSL
sent and received blocks, to get a very accurate picture of your WAS
progress! The QSL sent and received blocks require a Y or N ! Be
sure to put in either a Y or N or this function will not function
correctly.
SORT
Selecting the sort routine will allow you to sort the current
database by: Date of contact, 10X number, State/Country, or Callsign.
Simply select the letter corresponding to the sort you want.
The sort routine is now incorporated into the main program, so it
no longer requires separate sort routines! The program should sort
as many as 25,000 records with 640k base memory.
QUIT
Selecting QUIT will end the program and will return you to
DOS.
PROGRAM NOTES
See Addendum "A" for a step by step entry process to get you
started!
All dates MUST be entered in the format MM/DD/YY like 01/01/92
Do NOT leave out the leading zeros!
The print function will check for printer ready, and will print
your entire log book, 60 entries to a page! Make sure you have plenty
of paper to print large log books! If you run out of paper
or the printer otherwise messes up while printing is in progress,
the program WILL NOT DETECT THIS, and you may have to start the
program over again! This inconvenience could not be helped, in order
to keep the program short and to make generic printer codes
so that the program will print on most any printer. Sorry...
The sort program should sort up to 25,000 entries.. However, this
is not guaranteed on all machines...
The entries into any database are limited to 25,000 entries.
This program is FREE to anyone to use. You may not, however,
modify any of the program or documentation files, or change
the formats in any way. This program is copyrighted 1994 by
Dan Dye with all rights reserved. Limited technical support
will be provided via PLAYER BBS but this support is NOT offered
as part of the program! This program must be distributed with
all the following files in the Archive (ZIP):
LC.EXE (Main Program)
LCUPDAT.EXE (Old data file update program)
README.1ST (Important message on updating data)
LOGCALL.DOC (This manual)

ADDENDUM "A"
Here is a brief step by step logging process to get you started
logging contacts:
1. Have the display showing the main menu.
2. Contact a station on your rig and note his callsign.
3. Press F for Find. Enter the contacted station's complete
callsign in the box ( like KB5RZJ ) and press ENTER.
4. If the computer buzzes and displays a no records found
box, then you have not logged a contact with this callsign
before. In this case, hit ESC, then E for ENTER and enter
the new data into the database. Continue with the QSO and
then go to number one for another contact!
5. If the computer dings and displays information for the
callsign, then you have worked and logged this callsign
before. Normally, you would not enter contacts more than
once, but you can if you like. Hit ESC to quit, hit D if you
want to update the dates of contact or other information, or
hit K to see if you happen to have him more than once....(K
will also not allow you to edit the old info, and you will
have to find the call again to update info), D will take you
to the Review screen for this contact and you can edit his
info (Update the date of contact, etc). If you do not want
to update info, just hit ESC and inform him that you have
worked before. This feature is nice when contesting so you
will not have duplicate contacts!! If you so desire, you may
enter him more than once by pressing E for enter and entering
all his data, but this is not encouraged during contesting as
you will have duplicate entries. However, if you are keeping a
complete log of all contacts whether you have worked them before
or not, then by all means, enter them each time you work them!
Complete the QSO and go back to number 1, above!
